Playing Catchup

Due to technical problems the happily underpaid and hardworking staff here at ASVS-HN has been unable to update this site. We apologize for this and have stopped payment on all paychecks due to work stoppage. However, this is not to say that we haven't been watching and waiting to rise up like a poorly designed septic system. Much has occured in the past two months that richly deserves comment so let's just get to it....

The $500 Wes Hutchings Challenge

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, ASVS-HN has offered to pay Wes Hutchings five hundred dollars if he is able to get Dr. Curtis Saxton to include on his website, the Star Wars Technical Commentaries, that what the Millenium Falcon fires at the Death Star reactor in Return of the Jedi may not be concussion missiles as stated in canon and official materials, but rather an unknown energy weapon. If Mr. Hutchings fails in his attempt he is to pay ASVS-HN $0.00 (or 200 rubles; whichever is less).

Here's how it went down:

ASVS-HN: It comes down to this, if you are so sure that the novelization is  incorrect, then put together a webpage (you do have one don't you?) detailing your theory complete with evidence and submit your  findings to someone. After all, it isn't everyday that someone overturns canon. One good place would be to the Technical Commentaries. If your theory hold water, Dr. Saxton might include it on his page. Boy oh boy, wouldn't that just stick it to us smug cretins over at ASVS. You could then laugh in our faces and there wouldn't be a thing we could do about it. Of course, doing so would mean actually doing some work and <gasp>   actual research. I bet you $500.00 that you can't get Saxton to add your finding to his site. This is only if you win. If you lose you owe me $0.00. There it is Wes, you've got nothing to lose. If you're so sure you're right, you should jump at this.

Wes: I am sure I'm right. I've already put forth the evidence.   If I repeat it AGAIN, how will that prove anything to you?

C.Strowbridge: Did you read what he wrote?

As of this writing Mr. Hutchings has still refused to accept this challenge.

Reparations Repartee

Anytime race is the issue on the newsgroup, things tend to become heated rather quickly and the wise will avoid these posts like a Pauly Shore movie. However, [OT] Slavery in the 1860s may mean "reparations" in the 2000s has been for the most part civil....how sad.

February is Black History Month in the U.S. and yet somehow King's message of I have a dream has transformed into I have a grievance to file...how sad.

STGN

And ASVS wept when it learned there were no new lands to con....hey! What's that over there?

Star Wars VS The Borg (Tangent of Imps VS Feds)

"This battle wouldn't last very long, Borg conquer all of Star Wars galaxy in a few months. Not simply because of the Borg's massive numbers and firepower, picture ground combat against the Borg. Even advanced Federation Phaser Rifles can only get 10-12 shots off in a battle with Borg drones.

Now picture crappy Star Wars blasters against them...they'd adapt after only a couple of shots and then it'd all be over for Star Wars ground troops, they wouldn't be able to hold a single planet against them" "So i think that in the end the borg would end up having the advanatge. They would in an opening attack beable to take quite a few planets. Within that take quite a bit of tech and adapt to most of what the imperials, rebels or anyone else has. Hence when they actually met anyone that tried resistance it would be too late."

"The Borg can win this with simple raw stregth. We know of the Borgs 5 million isoton mine which can destroy a starsystem, 5,000,000 isotons is around 13,500,000 MT, which is rather powerful, if I dont say so myself. Next we have Borg Hull plating...what can I say other than it is UBER. In Scopion part 1 a Borg cube withstands the blast of an exploading planet at a range of about 200,000km. We cannot begin to imagine the blast that a planets explosion would cause, but this puts the strength of a borg cubes hull at anything up to several petatons of firepower, which is entering the insain region.

We also have assimilation. Once one of those ISD's is disabled and its chief enginere and commander are assimilated then you can say bye bye to any advantage the Empire may have had over the Borg. Instantly the collective knows what these people knew. " Federation ship vs. Star wars empire ship "If anyone actually watched episodes of sttgn they would know that if the empire was to attack the federation the empire would be oblitherated.

I remember one episode of sttng that proves my point. I dont remember the name of the episode, but this man was taking refuge on the enterprise and was wanted by two different civiliztions that were far less advanced then the federation, and when the ships showed sings of hostility worf reported that they are "locking lasers." Then Pacard said " dont they know that the lasers wont even get through our navigational deflector?" Thus proving that no matter how many ships the empire could throw at the federation their weapons would be useless against the federation vessles. please feel free to debate this and my reasoning." "this has been brought up on other forums, possibly here, because SW ships wouldn't be able to do much to the federation, but there are lots of them, and they have strong armor (possible shields, i am unsure, haven't seen sw for years) so the federation wouldn't be able to hurt them either, the only way the war would be won is by the empire, they would have to resort to ramming the ships. but i just remembered, they have peopel that can use the force, and choke the crews of the federation ships, so i think sw would win..."

"no .... that's just it ... it's NOT (just) the amount of energy that counts (that's why I never understand why people always start hauling out megatons and Yottatons and gods know what, while that's not the (whole) point) I mean: Lasers are basically concentrated light, right? and lasers can be distorted and seperated by prisms and certain lenses, right? Well, federation shields work as prisms and Diverting lenses at the same time, so a laser, regardless of the power would simply never even get through the navigational deflector (which deflects, as the name implies, certain things, like light) after all, our planet gets hit by megatons of energy every year, in the form of light and cosmic radiation, and it's "

"Someone will come in here stating how "lasers" in Star Wars are actually plasma, because the books say so. That's bs to me, as the books are not canon, but official. (this will end up turning into that debate again..usually does) Anyway, yeah for the most Star Wars weapons would do little to Federation ships. Picard pretty much laughed at lasers, so that would seem to tell that no matter how powerful they are they're still nothing much. I always get yelled at by Star Wars fans for that, saying i'm just trying to defend Star Trek, but i'm a big Star Wars fan too. I just stick to canon facts, unlike most Star Wars fans."

Stuart Mackey: My God in a BDSM parlour, but this is bad stuff. You see the problem on STGN? it makes SB look like a university of uber science scholars.

Dalton: IT HURTS!!!!!!

Iceberg: Can we at least put the Eclipse Thread in a paper bag, knock on their
door, light the bag and run like hell?

Setzer: I cannot watch, yet I fear to turn away...

Crayz9000: Just had a look at their fanfic forum...Aaugh <claws eyes out>.

Skayhan:

Oh dear Lord, not again....we're getting to be like the vikings...

Sven: "Look Olaf, the elk are scarce and the winter is brutal."
Olaf: "The Gods are angry."
Sven: "How shall we appease them?"
Olaf: "How else? Burn down another WebBoard."
Sven: "To the boats men! Fetch Daton and his uber-donut."
[Vagner's "Ride of the Valkyrie" swells]

meanwhile....on STGN...

Poster Child [typing]: ...and that is why Star Trek would win.
Nameless Victim: "I agree. I mean, really, lasers against the
Enterprise..."
Poster Child: "Hey, do you hear that?"
Nameless Victim: "What?"
Poster Child: "Music...think I heard this once in a Bugs Bunny
cartoon."
Nameless Victim: "No...."
Poster Child: "It's getting real loud...oh hold on someone's at the
front door. What the hell...Jesus H. Christ pimping out the hoes is
that a donut?!?!?!? URK!"
Nameless Victim [waits for a minute]: "P.C., I can hear that music
now. P.C.?"

Chuck: You can lead these whores to Wong but you can't make them think.

Speaking of Wong...

Mike Wong of Stardestroyer.net has apparently renewed his hunting license and plans on shooting, stuffing, and mounting as many trophies as he can before the seasons over. Beginning with a bloody victory in a formal debate with Gothmog in which anyone who read the SBer's post was a victim, he then "trapped and skinned" IXJac who said weapons do not penetrate armour based on force and pressure.

Mike Wong has now set his sights on Mike Griffiths over shield geometry/strength and BDZ calcs in another formal debate. If Wong is victorious here, will there be anyone able to stop his rampage?

On a side note, Mike Wong has posted in ASVS more times in the past two months than the past three years.
