Today we mourn...

A pic I took in August 1988 and the way I will always remember it

9/11/01

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones in the attack today. I've been lucky thus far. Of the five friends that I know who work in the WTC, all made it out or weren't there today. My favorite story along that line comes from my boss; her brother's neighbor came by his house at 12:30 accompanied by a case of beer saying, "I work on the 101st floor and I slept through my alarm."

Thousands of others were not so fortunate.

I could see the smoke from the destruction from where I live, thirty miles to the west. Usually, on a clear day like this was, I could see the top third of the Towers. For myself and the others here who live in the area, the Twin Towers were part of the landscape if not the defining part of the NYC skyline. It was shocking to watch them disappear. It is devastating to think of the lives lost in their ruin.

I got to speak to a number of people today who made it out of the Towers (for one person, this was the second time). They were still in shock, for the most part. Part of them was simply happy to be alive and the other horrified at the death they'd seen. One individual said that the bodies were exploding like watermelons as they hit the ground. You try going to sleep tonight with that image and sound replaying over and over in your mind. I haven't yet talked to anyone who lost someone in the attack, but I dread tomorrow.

One encouraging thing I found out about was when my mother and brother went to donate blood and were placed on a waiting list and that list is quickly growing according to news sources. I think that says quite a bit about the spirit of America and humanity itself.

Others will see our other side.

God bless America.
