In a dramatic turn of events, following over a year of growing animosity, Mike Wong has issued the following statement: It has come to my attention that some of the spacebattles.com babies are taking time out from their usual activities of sniping at me from the safety of their friendly-moderated forums, and they're calling me a coward for criticizing them on my site rather than going to their moderated forum and singlehandedly taking on a gaggle of them at once. I fail to see how my reluctance to engage in such an obviously weighted activity constitutes cowardice (particularly in light of the rapid responses expected in discussion boards and my heavy schedule; how many of them have two kids to raise?), but I don't like being called a coward. Therefore, I am picking up this thrown gauntlet as of right now(But Mike, you don't know where that gauntlet's been). |
To my spacebattles.com hecklers' gallery: grow a pair of testicles and appoint a champion. Let him and I agree upon a particular subject of debate. We will then hold a formal debate via E-mail, which he or she can post on spacebattles.com, and which I will also post on my own site. You've talked the talk, now walk the walk. By the way, for the record, I would like to remind SBers that I do recognize the fact that there are people at spacebattles.com who either disagree with the group to which I am referring, or don't give a damn about them one way or another. I use the term "spacebattles.com babies" because that's where they've chosen to camp, not because I think every one of you is like them.
This was originally posted on Stardestoyer.net and subsequently to Spacebattles.com by Phongn, who carries dual citizenship there and in ASVS.
The history between Mike Wong and Spacebattles has never been warm and fuzzy, rather like Elmer and Bugs, Ali and Frasier, or Paul Jauques H.R. Jr. and common sense. Beginning with the Wong is Wrong article of June 2000 and blossoming into full animosity over the Laird Incident, this challenge may be the culmination of the SB/Wong saga. It is interesting to note that, prior to all this, Spacebattles had a very favorable rating on the Stardestroyer.net link page. While this may no longer be the case, The site still has nice pictures and movies, and I know for a fact that some of its users and mods do care about decency... is part of the tagline for the current comment.
In Mike's opinion, it is a classic example of a few bad apples spoiling the whole damn universe.

Of course, this stirred up a flurry of activity in the forum on Spacebattles, generating over one hundred posts in the first day alone and yet again dashing the Million Monkey Shakespeare Theory. Lord Chaos, the VS board moderator, asked for patience since not all the members had chimed in yet. Just how lively was it? Here are some of the main players and their thoughts: |

Sounds Off This
is going nowhere. There are a total of 5 "babies". Me, E1701, BigBryan, Chris
O'Farrell, and Gothmog. I can only recall ONE of them calling Mike Wong coward like for
responding via hate mail page. His use of "babies" is plural, which isn't quite
accurate. It takes at
least 6.34E+06 to be plural The other "babies"
disagreed with him on some of the points he debated, but thats to be expected and hardly
worth note; their points,
I mean. The only other
possible point is that several of the "babies" were displeased with the personal
comments Mike Wong put in his rebutals (incidently, he was the first to instigate the name
calling, that doesn't make others doing name calling wrong either, its just a mater of
fact that he got some
really good zingers in there). Sadly Mike Wong perpetuates the problem by both using plural wording
where it doesn't belong and by countering insults sent back at him with more insults. And my god! he has a dangling paritciple
somewhere in there
e-mailing it to Mike Wong. (Ah the old "I have the proof around
here somewhere I just seem to have misplaced it") His method of scaling first off
was extremely flawed... how the hell do we know those were the same asteroids vaped by the
TLs? Espeically with so many asteroids around. Then he ran away... in a one-on-one
e-mail.. who's the coward here? (Who's the idiot? Isil'Zha has no idea how Mike scaled the size of the
asteroid, which asteroid it is, yet he then concludes that whatever method Mike used is
wrong)
either favor his own views, or to
simply not care). |

Lord Pontificates
to his ends. Insulting people while debating, it's childish, unecessary, hypocritical (he seems to want respect but gives none in return) and all this over a FICTIONAL universe. It makes no sense to take it so personally when the debate is no where near personal, and if he wants to cry foul because he was called a coward then he may want to look in a mirror. Because that is where it originated. (insulting) 3. More insults, generalizations, hypocrtical comments and childish behaviour. Insulting an opponent that hasn't even been appointed nor likely to, generalizaling SB as babies yet again, crying about being insulted yet was the first to fling insults at those who did not and calling out for a fight. Surprised his blood can flow with such clogging of testosterone. (insulting) 4. If I recall correctly it was I who thought of him as a coward and I am no where near being a trekkie, nor am I a warsie (although I like wars a few magnitudes more than star trek). They have no relevance to the means to his ends and the behaviour is childish at best in relation to a fiction show vs a fictional movie. (admission of guilt of insult/insulting) 5. Dosn't have time to debate with the people he manages to find time to insult and create a rather large page countering their points.... uhuh. (contradictory statement) 6. He clearly knows he is superior to any who would oppose him due to literacy quality, scientific background, debating experience as well as a large following of people who are more inclined to take his side in all things. (inferiority complex) 7. By the by, I actually agree
with many of his debates, including military tactics, creationism debate etc. As I stated,
that was never my problem with him. (sucking up)
*see the newly restored piece on the SB1FM vs B5Center Big Steve
angry Trekkies and anti-Wongites
(as he would've been, just like how Brian Young supporters and/or anyone who argues
against inflated B5 tech values get waylaid by masses of Fivers) he's called a coward by
the same, so he counters by challenging these same people to send their best man to debate
him personally in a neutral e-mail environment that both can freely post on their
discussion board/site. |

I can forsee nothing good coming of this. It shall be bloody. I will be ugly. - Vagabond-45 (No, he really said that)
I too am getting a little miffed by all the Wong-centered posts. If we're going to debate let's debate the man's arguments, not the man himself. - IXJac
In both ASVS and Spacebattles there was much excitement over the forthcoming battle. Commander Thelea and the Diciples of Wong have been seen at their Temple of Saxton performing rituals so sick as to prohibit their description here. The Baron tearfully said that his sheep will be emotionally scarred for the rest of their lives and some may have to be put down. Otherwise the landscape of ASVS is quiet in anticipation of a great bloodletting....
However, ASVS-HN has learned that as of Sunday, December 9, Gothmog has risen to accept Mike Wong's challenge. They have agreed to a debate on "Methods of Sci-Fi Analysis" and other tediously boring issues via E-mail in an exchage that will be flame-free.
The crowds of spectators in both ASVS and SB grew ugly at this news but then they realized they weren't that good looking to begin with so nothing came of it.

"There's not enough me", complained Charles Sonnenburg as he stormed into the local Burger King. Brandishing Chris O'Farrell's gym socks under the nose of a terrified employee, the "Moderator" demanded four supersized Whopper Extra Value meals with three chocolate shakes, four apple pies, and a diet coke.
He then led police on a wild chase through the streets; the pursuing vehicles swerving repeatedly to avoid the barage of rolled up wrappers and LotR collector glasses. The chase ended at his place of work where Chuck locked himself in the copy room and refused to come out. "You'll never get me copper! Hah, I got a whole vending machine and a jar of quarters in here."
The standoff ended a short time later when Chuck realized the vending machine only dispensed health foods.
